Should One Repeat a Hep B Vaccine Series?

by Chari Cohen, Hepatitis B Expert

Question: Is it wise to repeat a Hep B vaccine series?

The good news is that there is a safe and effective vaccine to protect against getting a hepatitis b virus infection. It is never too late to start the hepatitis B vaccine (unless you are already infected with the hepatitis B virus). The vaccine is given as 3 shots over a 6-month period. There is also a 2-dose vaccine option for adults ages 18 and over. The vaccine offers a lifetime of protection against a hepatitis B infection. At this time, the CDC does not currently recommend re-vaccination in persons with intact immune systems. Once a person completes the hepatitis B vaccine series, they should be protected for life and should not need to repeat the vaccine series, unless they have not responded to the vaccine for some reason.
